Really…Is this a democracy?

& Precisely 48 years ago, at 12:30 p.m. Texas time, in broad daylight, in front of hundreds of witnesses and millions of viewers of subsequently revealed films, they blew off the head of the President of the United States and got away with it.

The government that we once trusted told us that one man — a mediocre marksman with a clunky old unsighted rifle, no motive, and a pretty good alibi — did it. Within two days that man, while being escorted by a squad of lawmen in a Dallas jailhouse, was shot in the gut and silenced forever by a strangely privileged low-level mobster. The government told us that the assassin of the accused assassin did it only because he wanted to spare the president’s wife the agony of a trial.

Although most Americans didn’t swallow such a steaming pile of kaka, this country’s vaunted mainstream media  rolled over like a pampered pup and happily lapped up any and all ludicrous explanations concocted to counter a mounting number of valid, logical, intelligent responses that questioned the government’s conclusions and pointed to multiple shooters, botched autopsies, and ignored or hidden evidence.

Since the 1960s, a mountain of those questions has been built and even a congressional committee concluded that there was a conspiracy to kill John F. Kennedy. Yet, the government sticks to its guns and ignores the fact that there was a coup d’etat in America on Nov. 22, 1963.

Now, nearly a half-century later, despite clear, court-confirmed laws that say otherwise, despite Presidential proclamations of transparency, the CIA flips the bird to the judicial system and refuses to release documents that would shed even more light into the dark cavern of coverup.* Why? Why must those and other governmental records that are 50 years old still be secret? There is only one answer to that question, of course. It is that those records will divulge more evidence of the truth, and if the truth is known, millions of Americans won’t like it, and might start acting like Tunisians, Egyptians, Libyans, Syrians, and Wall St. Occupiers. They will know, even more surely than they do now, that their vote can and will be taken from them by any means — money if possible, bullets if necessary — by a few who enjoy very special privileges and wield unassailable power with arrogance and impunity.

Until the truth is known, though, what is our form of government?

Is this a democracy? Don’t bet on it.

& I’m outta here.
